You’ve had a long day, and it’s time to relax with a snack and stream your favorite show. But it’s hard to get comfortable because you can’t stop your couch cushions from sliding under you. When you finally get them back in place, you may find that your couch is sagging or that you still can’t get into a comfortable position.
Today, we’re helping you learn how to keep couch cushions from sliding off your couch. These simple DIY techniques are perfect for a weekend project, and the result is a better-looking, more comfortable sofa.
Install Velcro Strips
Some furniture may already have Velcro strips attached to keep cushions in place. Over time, the Velcro loses its ability to stick and may need to be replaced. Adding or replacing strips is reasonably simple if your couch doesn’t have Velcro already.
If you’re handy with a needle and thread, you can sew a strip onto the cushion cover and place another on the couch frame or purchase sticky-backed Velcro strips from your local craft store. Simply line up the strips, and voila! Your couch cushions won’t slide.
The only drawback to Velcro strips on your sofa is that they keep you from being able to flip the cushions. If your couches get heavy usage and you don’t want the filling to get squashed in the middle, one of the other options below may work better.
Use a Non-Slip Cushion Pad
Purchase a non-slip cushion pad from a local furniture store and simply slide it underneath the cushions and along the back of the couch to stop the pillows from moving around while you’re sitting. It works for all types of seating, including patio furniture. Cushion pads have a firm grip without using Velcro or glue. They don’t bunch up because of thick felt support in the middle, so they usually stay put. Plus, you can trim them with scissors for a custom fit to keep the pad from showing.
Fix Your Couch Support
If your couch cushions don’t stop sliding off because the couch itself is sagging, you can install new couch support. These larger support pads support even heavy cushions and give you better support while you're sitting on the furniture.
Use Rings and Hooks
Hooks and rings are a more advanced way to solve the problem of how to keep cushions from sliding off your couch. It’s similar to the Velcro method of keeping the pillows and seating in place. However, you’ll need to have a little bit of sewing knowledge for this.
Purchase plastic hooks that attach to rings on the couch. Sew small fabric pieces at intervals along the back of each cushion, then attach the hooks into each ring. The rings can be sewn into the back of the couch frame, again using small pieces of fabric to attach the ring to the furniture.
Make sure to match up the hook and ring placements before you start, though! A benefit of the hook and ring method is that you can still flip your cushions to even out wear, unlike using Velcro strips.
Purchase a Couch Cover
If you’re not a crafty person, or if sewing seems like a lot of work, you can opt instead for a couch cover. Couch covers wrap the entire piece of furniture, fitting over the frame and tucking around the cushions.
This item consists of a large drape that goes over the couch frame and the back of the couch with elastic bands or lacing ties to ensure a snug fit covering all of your cushions.
Couch covers keep all of the pillows and cushions together so they don’t start sliding independently of each other. If you have children or pets, a couch cover can preserve your furniture since it can be removed, washed, and replaced.
Invest In New Living Room Furniture
If your couch cushions have slipped and slid so much that the filling isn’t holding up, or if adding additional support to the couch still leaves it feeling lopsided and uncomfortable, it may be time to replace your sofa loveseat and ottoman.
